Why a camera survey matters

Rats are strong swimmers and confident climbers, and it's not unusual for them to move around a property via the drainage system, or get stuck when a pipe is damaged, blocked or poorly sealed. If you're hearing scratching, noticing smells, or a rat problem keeps coming back despite treatment, the drains are often the missing piece.

Rather than guess, we feed a waterproof camera through the drain run to see exactly what's happening below ground – damage, blockages, misaligned joints, or a creature that's become trapped – before recommending any work.

  • Full CCTV inspection of the drain run
  • Identifies damage, blockages & entry points
  • Non-return valve installation to stop re-entry
  • Available for domestic & commercial properties

What we look for

Cracked or displaced pipework, root ingress, blockages, and gaps where pests are getting in or out of the system.

Non-return valves

Where rats are entering via the drain, we can fit a non-return valve that lets waste flow out but stops anything climbing back in.

A proper record

You get a clear picture of what's actually going on underground – useful for your own records, or for a landlord or managing agent.

When to ask for a camera survey

Rats keep coming back

Treatment has worked before, but the problem returns – often a sign pests are re-entering through the drains rather than above ground.

Scratching near drains or toilets

Noise from below ground, particularly near manholes, gullies or downstairs toilets, can point to activity in the drain run.

A creature seems trapped

If something has crawled down a drain and can't get back out, a camera survey lets us confirm what's there before any work starts.

Camera drain survey frequently asked questions

What does a camera survey actually involve?

We feed a waterproof camera through the drain run and inspect the whole length of it. We are looking for damage, blockages, misaligned joints and any opening a rat could be using to get from the sewer into your property. It is the difference between guessing where they are coming from and knowing.

Why would a pest controller survey my drains?

Because with rats, the drains are very often the answer. If rats keep coming back after treatment, or you can hear scratching near drains or toilets, there is usually a defect letting them in and no amount of baiting inside the house will fix that. Treating the symptom works until the bait runs out. Finding the hole works permanently.

Do I get a copy of the footage?

You get a clear picture of what the survey found, which is useful for your own records or for showing a landlord or managing agent. If you need the footage in a particular format for a specific purpose, tell us when you book so we can set it up properly rather than after the fact.

My drain is damaged. Whose responsibility is it to fix?

As a rough rule, pipes inside your boundary that serve only your property are yours. The lateral drain beyond your boundary, and any shared or public sewer, transferred to the water company in October 2011. There is one catch worth knowing: pipes connected after July 2011 did not transfer, so newer properties can differ. Check with your water company before paying for anything.

What is a non-return valve and do I need one?

It is a one-way flap fitted into the drain that lets waste out and stops rats coming back up. If a survey shows rats are getting in through the drainage system, it is usually the permanent fix, because it closes the route rather than killing the individuals using it. We install them as a follow-on from the survey where the drain run makes it the right answer.

There is an animal stuck down my drain. Can you help?

Yes, and this is worth a phone call rather than a form. The camera lets us see exactly what is down there and where, which usually means the animal can be reached without digging anything up. Call us rather than trying to reach it yourself.

Other ways we can help

Whichever side of the business you need, every job starts with a survey and a fixed price before any work begins – and the call-out fee is deducted from the cost when a treatment is carried out.
