Why bird proofing matters

Pigeons and gulls cause excessive noise and large amounts of droppings, which damage stonework, erode paint and metal, and can spread disease. A nesting site can also bring in secondary pests such as mites, beetles and fleas – so the sooner a building is proofed, the less there is to put right.

Bird netting

Discreet, tensioned netting fitted across roof voids, courtyards, loading bays and ledges to physically exclude birds from a space altogether. It's one of the most effective long-term solutions for larger or repeatedly-targeted areas, and is barely visible once fitted.

Solar panel proofing

Birds love to nest underneath solar panels, where droppings and debris can damage cabling and reduce panel efficiency. We fit purpose-made mesh proofing around the panel edges to seal the gap without affecting performance or invalidating your panel warranty.

Spikes & spiking

Discreet anti-perch spike strips fitted to ledges, signage, beams and roof lines to stop birds landing and roosting in the first place – a simple, humane deterrent that works well on smaller or awkward areas where netting isn't practical.

Wire systems & deterrents

For sites where netting or spiking aren't suitable, we also fit bird-wire systems, and can advise on deterrent sound systems and other measures as part of a wider proofing plan.

Every building is different

There's no off-the-shelf approach to bird control. We survey the site, work out where birds are getting in and roosting, and put together a proofing plan using the right combination of methods for that particular building – rather than a single fix applied everywhere.

Pricing

Cost depends on the pest bird involved, the type of property and the method chosen, so we don't quote a flat price for bird proofing. Every job starts with a no-obligation survey of the building and a fixed price before any work begins.

Already have birds living there?

If pigeons or gulls have already moved in, see our pest bird removal page for treatment and pricing before proofing goes up.

Bird proofing frequently asked questions

Is it legal to stop birds nesting on my building?

Yes. Proofing a building with netting, spikes or wire needs no licence at all, and Natural England lists it as the preferred alternative to lethal control. The important caveat is timing. All wild birds, their eggs and nests in use are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so proofing cannot go ahead where it would damage an active nest or trap birds inside.

What happens if there is already a nest?

We wait. Once a nest is in use or being built, it is protected, and so are the eggs, so the work has to hold until the nest is no longer active. We will survey, plan the job and price it, then book the installation for a point when it can go ahead lawfully. Anyone offering to do it sooner is offering you a problem, not a service.

Do you deal with gulls?

We proof against them, yes. What we cannot do is lethally control them or remove their nests on a general licence, because no gull species has been on one since 2020, following significant declines in herring and lesser black-backed gull numbers. That route now needs an individual licence from Natural England, which takes time and is not granted lightly. Proofing is usually the practical answer anyway, because it solves the problem permanently rather than seasonally.

Will netting or spikes damage my building?

Fitted properly, no. Tensioned netting is fixed to a framework of fixings sized for the substrate, and it is barely visible once up. Spikes are bonded or fixed to ledges and roof lines. Everything can be removed later if the building changes use. The damage people worry about is almost always from a bad installation rather than from the method itself.

Can you proof solar panels?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we get asked for. Pigeons nesting underneath panels cause mess, noise and a surprising amount of damage to cabling. We fit mesh around the panel edges, which stops birds getting underneath without affecting how the panels perform or invalidating the panel warranty.

How long does bird proofing last?

Properly installed netting and spike systems are a long term fix rather than a seasonal one, which is the main argument for proofing over deterrents. Systems should be checked periodically, particularly after storms or roof work, and netting tension can need adjusting over time. We will tell you what your particular installation needs at the survey.

How much does it cost?

There is no standard price, because no two buildings present the same problem. Cost depends on the species, the property, the access required and which method actually suits. Every job starts with a no-obligation survey to find the entry and roosting points, and you get a fixed price before any work begins.

Other ways we can help

Whichever side of the business you need, every job starts with a survey and a fixed price before any work begins – and the call-out fee is deducted from the cost when a treatment is carried out.
